Monday mornings start with a meeting at the Pandoo Club. In our usual round table of highs and lows of the previous week, it was clear that everybody’s high point was the Parent’s Night we held last Saturday.
The energy was buzzing all day as last minute preparations for the evening were taking place. It felt like we were inviting people into our homes. We wanted everything to be perfect. In the past months we have done so many activities with the kids, have spent so many hours laughing, learning and growing. We wanted to take the step forward and include more parents in the process.
For me, the quote, “It takes a village to raise a kid,” resonates. When we work together toward a common goal we can achieve so much more. We try very hard to bring out the best in every child who walks through our community center door. We try to empower them and to help them make changes that stick.
I believe in the power of addition. The more people you have who add to your life, the more chances you have of succeeding. I try to be mindful of this, and I try to be an addition to the lives of people I meet. I try to surround myself with these types of people as well.
Sometimes the day-to-day obstacles we face seem hard to overcome. That’s why we need as many people on our team as possible. That night was a step forward in a better collaboration. The Pandoo Club was full, hot and loud, but the energy and enthusiasm were also very high. It was amazing to see the parents’ faces light up as they looked at pictures of all the activities we’ve done.
But for me, the highlight came in the children’s presentations. You could see such pride in the parents; they felt empowered by watching their children light up. Everything has a place and time and I think it was a great idea to wait for this moment to take a step forward in this partnership. It felt right.
What a night! I can’t wait to see where it leads.
