Stepping Up For Literacy

By: Geneviève Bisson

Having just had spent two full days on a plane you would imagine that I would have arrived in Boston completely exhausted.

However, I was ecstatic! Three full days of learning from some of the brightest minds in education at the International Literacy Conference!  What an amazing opportunity. I was full of anticipation and extremely grateful to be there.

The teacher suddenly became the student. I flipped the event catalogue through and through looking at all the available workshops. It was hard to choose! All these sessions seemed so interesting and touched on matter that I felt would help us strengthen our Literacy Program. Every day my schedule was packed. I paced myself from one event to the next not wanting to miss anything. The three days flew by. While at the conference, I saw all five key note speakers who were truly remarkable. Their passion for literacy and the vision they all shared was electrifying.  I also got the opportunity to attend many workshop sessions and explored the exhibit on several occasion. I not only left with a suitcase heavier from all the books I received, but also with a head full of ideas and a heart full of hope.

You often hear the right message at the right time and I felt my spirit uplifted and my heart ready to continue taking on challenges. We are on the right track and we are definitely not alone sharing the same mission, together let’s continue empowering kids through literacy by sharing this contagious enthusiasm and belief that we can make a difference. We can and we do, let’s continue stepping up for literacy.
